Nail Fungal Treatment

Onychomycosis (nail fungus) can affect finger or toe nails. It becomes more common with age, and certain other groups have a higher risk of developing the condition – people with diabetes, athlete’s foot, or circulation problems; people who sweat a lot, or even use communal showers at the gym or swimming pool, and those who have damaged their nails.

Treatment options

You may be reading this because you have found that antifungal nail paints don’t work for you, or because you have read about the possible side effects of oral antifungal drugs. Treatment with Nd:YAG 1064 offers a reliable and effective treatment, without the risk of uncomfortable side effects.

Can everyone be treated?

The Nordlys system’s Nd:YAG 1064 nail fungus treatment is able to treat patients of all colours of skin. Before treatment, your therapist may take a nail cutting to ensure that fungus is the real cause of your nail problem.

How does treatment work

A series of flashes of infrared light is aimed across the whole nail, including the nail folds (the skin immediately surrounding the sides and base of the nail). This heats up and destroys the fungus that is present. To ensure complete coverage, the whole series of pulses is repeated four times, and the individual flashes overlap each other.

How long does a treatment take?

Because the fungus can spread from one nail to another, normally all ten nails are treated, even if nail fungus is visible on only one or two fingers or toes. However, treatment of the whole ten nails normally takes only ten minutes.

How many treatments do I need?

Typically, between 4-12 treatments are necessary. The first four treatments are spaced one week apart, with a monthly treatments thereafter. Following the treatment, an area of new clear nail growth will be seen. Since the nail grows slowly, this clear area may take 3-4 weeks to become apparent. There are guidelines and aftercare given to prevent re infection

Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?

Like any other treatment of nail fungus, this a treatment, not a cure. It deals with the problem that exists and does not give immunity against infection at some future time. Your therapist will advise you on the best ways to prevent reinfection.

You will want to have the nails filed thinner for more effective laser penetration into the fungus filled nail bed. Please clean your feet well, clients must remove any traces of nail polish as this can cause complications with the laser.

Does it hurt?

In a word, “No”. The treatment gives a feeling of gentle warmth while the laser is flashing.

How can I be sure this is the best available treatment?

Nd:YAG provides the best available treatment in terms of efficacy and comfort. This is in part due to the penetration depth of the 1064nm wavelength, being able to pass through the nail and apply warmth to the nail bed.

However, like any other treatment of nail fungus, the Nordlys nail fungus treatment is not a cure. It deals with the problem that exists, and does not give immunity against infection in the future. Your therapist will advise you on the best ways to prevent reinfection.
